7.01.2008:
STUPID FUCKING APPLE
8:24 PMI have iTunes on my desktop. I sync my iPod with that machine.
I have iTunes on my laptop. I play my desktop's library through it.
I am away from home, have my laptop, and my ipod with me. I plug the ipod into the laptop, because I need some tunes.
iTunes syncs the ipod with the laptop, thus deleting 120 gb of music off my ipod in one fell swoop.
WHY THE FUCK IS iTUNES SO FUCKING STUPID THAT IT CAN'T TELL THAT A FULLY STOCKED LIBRARY ON AN IPOD IS NOT TO BE DELETED BY SYNCING TO AN EMPTY LIBRARY???? WHY?????????

even worse, try turning the autosync off. even when you turn it off, which takes forever to figure out how to do, it doesn't turn off. seriously, i've turned it off repeatedly only to find that my ipod would automatically sync when plugged in. that's why i have a zune. and an iphone, but i don't use the ipod functionality in it at all.
Weird. I don't use autosync at all with iPods (can't not do it with an iPhone, though). Haven't had any problems.
Um, I've done this before and it pops up saying "this ipod is synced with another computer, would you like to sync with this library" and you click no and you're fine. Unless it didn't give you the option in which case I'm going to call you a liar who randomly clicks away stupid dialog boxes he shouldn't. and if you "really really didn't see any dialog boxes" then I'm sorry you're in denial, you fucked up. stop blaming the itunes.
as far as turning autosync off i haven't had an issue with it at all, i had it syncing music before, got sick of it, changed the option and it hasn't tried doing it since.
possibly he didn't realise "sync with this computer" was synonymous with "delete everything off the ipod"
windows media player has the same problem as itunes in that it can only permanently sync a device to one computer, but then again if a file is on the device and not the computer it'll upload it to the computer; also, there's a don't-permanently-sync-just-transfer-what-I-ask-you-to mode.
or, y'know, just stick it in mass storage mode and just drag the files over.
this is why some people don't like ipods (itunes, iphones, apple in general...): it's their way or the highway. Even if 80% of the time their way is better, that still leaves you frustrated 20% of the time.
Another reason I have a Zune.

I sync my Zune on several computers. I have movies on one computer and music on another. I sync my music, then go and add movies (this one has my hubby's music and not mine, and he converts my movies for me...so sweet). Never deletes anything ever. And it doesn't put my tunes on the other computer.
Get a Zune, Joe. You're just putting off the inevitable. I'm thinking of Xbox vs. PS2&3 :-P
